Regardless of whether you decide to use A to Z Movers as your mover or not,  these tips and tricks can help you save money and ensure your move transpires as efficiently as possible, saving you time and money.

A few things of note when using A to Z Movers to keep in mind, many of these apply to other companies as well but you may want to ask to make sure if not getting it in writing (save yourself the headache, get it in writing).

Trash Bags/Lawn and Leaf Bags?

Using trash bags instead of boxes, sure they’re cheap (but what would the neighbors think)?  Trash bags happen to be a perfect for some packing chores as long as you’re careful what you stuff them with.   Common sense dictates that only soft, light articles be packaged this way; stuffed toys, linens, towels, clothing, pillows and cushions.  Not only do they do do the job at a fraction of the cost of boxes but they also to serve to keep your white sofa cushions white!  Some movers may be a little “picky” about using these but I would suppose much of that would have to do with decreased box sales.  ;)  We highly recommend buying high quality lawn and leaf bags.  Despite quality trash bags higher price they’re still a fraction of 4.0 cu ft boxes, or large boxes.

In addition to the side benefit of keeping dirt, mover’s sweat and oft-used moving quilts off your light and bright cushions, comforters, blankets and stuffed animals, think of how much the alternative large box costs in comparison.  Do make certain your chosen mover is OK with the idea (can’t imagine why they wouldn’t be if they’re tied off correctly?) but this is just another small tip to save cash and stay on the Green side of things when possible.

Please be considerate and tie them off securely, this way they don’t open whilst in transport  (end dirtying up your whites after all) and please don’t pack with sharp, hard, fragile, papers, books, files, crushales (lampshades)  nor any items heavy enough to burst them.  Do make sure your movers realize these are NOT trash.  Movers consider these large boxes,  by the way,  when charging Flat rates.

As one alternative to expensive wardrobes, Lawn and Leaf bags make for a great way to keep your hanging clothes clean when opting for A to Z Mover’s thriftier service of Quilt-Wrapping your hanging clothes.   Please ask other movers about this as not all offer this option.  Simply tape or tie a reasonable amount (3-5 hangers) of clothes hangers together,  cover with a trash bag and poke the hangers out through what would normally be the bottom of the bag.  Keep in mind, no matter how hanging clothes are moved, short of your car, they will get wrinkled.  Covering them with the bags only serves to keep them clean.

Mattress Covers

We do not as a rule cover your mattresses with the flimsy and poorly made mattress slipcovers available at Storage Lockers, Moving Supply stores, Wal Mart and even Home Depot.  Truth is, carrying a large mattress with these cheap, slippery and thin covers not only makes it quite difficult, especially when steps are involved,  but they can cause considerable more damage than they save if they rip while being carried.  We do keep your mattresses on top of and covered with clean moving quilt when they’re in the truck, keeping them clean and nice.

We will however, at your request, cover your mattress with these plastic sheets if you happen to pick some up.  There’s no guarantee they’ll stay on when bringing them back into your house but they’ll be covered when in the vehicle.   The majority of these are cheaply made and tear easily, especially when steps are involved.   Again, we do not recommend these, there are much better options below but not quite as cheap.  This service is also free of charge as long as you supply the covers. Please allow us our best judgement and cover them when in the truck to avoid the aforementioned accidents.   Careful when purchasing, two Queen covers will not cover a King but a King will cover all the rest save one end of a California King as these are a longer mattress.  Mattress covers are a great idea and some are quality made items replete with handles.  These do a as advertised but aren’t 99 cents and made of plastic tissue.

Another great way to keep your mattress clean and stain-free is to securely cover them with bedsheets.  You might dirty up a bedsheet but your mattress will be none worse for the wear.  Care must be taken to secure them well though, the elasticized ones slip off too easy when being manipulated up and down stairs and through tight areas.

For the best protection of your mattresses, sofas and other light colored upholstered furniture, we recommend shrink wrapping.  This affords the best protection of all and is highly recommended although somewhat expensive.  Please ask your estimator when booking if you care to have any items shrink-wrapped.

Moving Plants. Live delivery of plants is not guaranteed but they usually do well when moving locally.  Plants do make a large mess in the truck though which the movers can mistakenly step in and dirty your carpets.  A good idea for moving plants is to encase the plantholder/pot in a lawnbag and tie it off at the trunk.   Small plants should be boxed.  This is one exception to the “no open box rule” many movers insist upon, although I can’t guarantee all movers will agree with this, we do.
